Leaders Who Come From the Bottom Up Make Better Managers


Unique Client Solutions recently read research that bosses who have been through the system of an industry themselves, make better leaders.

Unique Client Solutions was interested to read the research conducted by London’s Cass Business School and the University of Sheffield which analysed every Formula One race that has taken place over the last 60 years. The results showed that teams led by bosses who had started out as drivers or mechanics themselves won twice as many races as their competitors.

The figures showed that success was dramatically improved in businesses led by ‘expert leaders’, those who have a deep knowledge and experience of the firm’s core business, rather than general managers who are trained with a broad range of skills. One of the authors of the study, Dr Amanda Goodall said “Should the BMW boss be an engineer? Are doctors better at running NHS hospitals? We would argue, yes.”

A spokesperson for the company said, “There has been a general swing over the last few decades to train people up to be ‘managers’ who can go out and work with any kind of business. Whilst we’re sure some of them are very successful surely it is common sense to have someone with a detailed knowledge of the sector and who have also learnt to be great leaders?"

The research concluded that ‘expert leaders’ made better managers because their technical knowledge allowed them to put together better tactics and their strategies were more intuitive. They were more adaptable and had more credibility and better relationships with their teams who respected the fact that they had done it themselves.

Unique Client Solutions Champions an Active Lifestyle


Unique Client Solutions was fascinated to learn that a sedentary lifestyle can dramatically shorten our lives.

In a paper published by The Lancet yesterday researchers from 16 countries have worked out the drastic health dangers of an inactive lifestyle. With the Olympics just days away Unique Client Solutions takes a look at the research and explains why they believe an active job is important.

The research shows that worldwide one in three adults doesn’t achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week and this rises to one in two in the UK. The Lancet researchers have estimated that a lack of exercise is responsible for roughly 5.3m deaths a year, approximately the same number as smoking. This is caused through diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and breast and bowel cancer which have been linked to lack of exercise. A representative from Unique Client Solutions said, “These are really shocking statistics, we’re sure that most people have no idea how great a part lack of exercise plays in their lifespan.”


The researchers are hoping not only to get people into the gym, but to change their lives in such a way that they build physical activity into the their day as much as possible. “At Unique Client Solutions we totally agree, being fit and healthy is not simply about going to the gym once a week. It’s about choosing the stairs instead of the lift, it’s about walking short journeys instead of driving and engaging in fun physical activities with your family and friends.”

Unique Client Solutions Announce Their Expansion to The Netherlands


Unique Client Solutions is delighted to announce their expansion to the Netherlands in January 2013.

Customer acquisitions company Unique Client Solutions has had an incredibly busy 2012 taking on new clients and increasing their customer bases dramatically over the last 7 months. But behind the scenes even more work has been going on to expand not only throughout the UK but also into Europe. After looking at several European countries they have chosen the Netherlands as their target.

A spokesperson for Unique Client Solutions said, “This is an incredibly exciting time for us. This move has been in the pipeline for some months now and we have been talking to a number of clients in the Netherlands and we now have two very exciting prospects on the table.

Long term we have huge goals in the area. From our new base in Amsterdam we will be looking to move into Belgium and Germany as well. This is an area of Europe that simply doesn’t have the direct sales and customer acquisitions expertise that we have to offer. Much like the UK, the Netherlands is moving towards outsourcing their sales more and more as it is the most cost–effective solution for companies. We hope to be able to offer the excellent results that we’re getting in the UK on a global scale.”

The Sheffield-based company is hoping to take a small team across with them to the Netherlands and building further there. “We’re looking forwards to growing rapidly when we head over there in 2013 and building a multi-national company. Amsterdam is an incredible city and from what we’ve found so far the people are fantastic as well. We can’t wait to start interacting with them. Roll on January 2013!”

For now Unique Client Solutions will be focussing on the rest of the 2012 in the UK. "We're still expanding at home as well at the moment and with  huge commitments to our clients here we won't let the excitement of our move to the Netherlands distract us from our goals for them."

Unique Client Solutions Anticipates YouView Unveil


Unique Client Solutions has learnt that YouView, Britain’s newest digital TV service, is due to be launched this week.

After a number of delays CEO Lord Sugar is set to unveil the latest digital TV service to hit the market this week. Unique Client Solutions, a customer acquisitions company with offices in Sheffield and Nottingham, looks at what the service has to offer.

A combined collaboration between the BBC, ITV, TalkTalk and BT, Channel 4 and Channel 5, YouView will use broadband to deliver on demand content in addition to Freeview channels. The boxes will record programmes and will also be linked up to services such as BBC’s iPlayer, ITV Player and online streaming services such as Netflix. The most unusual feature of the product will be that there will be a programme guide that goes backwards as well as forwards. That way users can easily find programmes that they’ve missed and watch them. There is no monthly subscription to the service, you simply pay for the all in one box.

What does Unique Client Solutions think of the service and is there space for it in the market? Managing director Simon Tomlinson says, “The fact that this has been put together by big industry names such as TalkTalk and the BBC gives it plenty of credibility. Admittedly there are a number of similar services out there like Virgin Media but the fact that there is no subscription fee will be a big selling point. They’ve taken their time developing it and if that correlates to building a great product then we think that there will still be a huge audience for it.”

YouView has started to be advertised on TV in recent weeks and Unique Client Solutions had taken this as an indicator that the service would be launched in time for the Olympics which would be a huge bonus. With London 2012 just around the corner the team at Unique Client Solutions will be intrigued to see what announcements are made at the unveil this week.
